Luckily I was at my parents house when I thought about this (I was meant to get it all along).
I notice there are some flash cards with quotes already in the middle of the volume.
Nice one by Elizabeth Cady Stanton is nice but this is the one that caught my eye,

But in its emphasis an individual acquisitiveness, competitiveness, and greed (the profit), its inherent hierarchism (the class structure), and its continued reliance on violence (e.g. colonial wars), capitalism remained fundamentally androcratic [male-dominator, female-dominated].

Being intrigued by the word androcratic, I looked it up online. Subsequently, I found this:

http://www.venusandherlover.com/Patriarchy.html

which turned me onto Joshua 8:24

"When Israel had finished slaughtering all the inhabitants of Ai in the open wilderness where they pursued them and all of them to the very last had fallen by the edge of the sword, all Israel returned to Ai, and smote it with the edge of the sword. And all who fell that day, both men and women, were 12,000, all the people of Ai. For Joshua did not draw back his hand, with which he stretched his javelin, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai. Only the cattle and the spoils of that city Israel took as their booty, according to the word of the Lord which He commanded Joshua. So Joshua burned Ai, and made it forever a heap of ruins. . ."

on media and community

media plus community equals democracy

communication + people comming together = dialog

from m-w.com

2 a : a conversation between two or more persons; b : an exchange of ideas and opinions <organized>[dialogues on human rights] c : a discussion between representatives of parties to a conflict that is aimed at resolution [dialogue between loggers and environmentalists]

4 : a musical composition for two or more parts suggestive of a conversation

Etymology: Middle English dialoge, from Anglo-French dialogue, from Latin dialogus, from Greek dialogos, from dialegesthai to converse, from dia- + legein to speak -- more at LEGEND

At 4 am the truck outside my window is emptying the dumpster complete with cracking metal collisions of steel forks upon the large metal waste container.
</organized>

Snow, Love, and Introspection

Horray! A thick blanket of snow has blessed the city of Portland with a few days off, right after Martin Luther King Jr. Day. This morning on the radio I heard a speech by him on the Vietnam war in which he called for the immediate cessation of the US military involvement. I think these words would be extremely timely right now with regards to Iraq.
I would encourage folks to find that speech and see for yourself how poignant his words still persist to this day.
The snowfall does a wonderful thing for couples in love. It's softening effect on the mind through the stillness and purity of the white fluffies falling from the sky. Christine and some friends and I took a walk through the local cemetery after sleeping in. Then we took another walk with friends to a diner where we had a really good hearty meal for a cold winter's day. Then we walked to the riverside and strolled down the esplanade to take in the calm Willamette river, and the downtown skyline.
Throughout these days, Christine and I have strengthened our relationship as we've learned more about each other and our particular dispositions and propensities. This is the growing part of love that I really appreciate despite the sometimes unpleasant moods.
So these experiences have led me of course to do some more introspection on the nature of my goals (none of which I can identify truthfully at this time) and my ability and/or determination to meet them. I have not engaged that process of goal creation (a la Stephen Covey) since my bandleading days in early 2000-2001.
Since moving to Portland, my goals have morphed into actions related to systemic change in our existence of humankind - Christianity and capitalism to be specific. The two are wildly incongruent despite what our priests and politicians claim. Christ taught his followers to covet nothing and that giving is better than taking. Capitalism teaches the opposite.
Well, I've taken note that the dollar will continue its decline in value on the world financial market and I'm wondering if I should get over to Europe and start making some Euros. I mean the smart people are investing in gold, copper, and other metals where the purity can be physcially tested. The "purity" of the dollar right now is tainted with blood of the innocent and the sweat and tears of the helpless.
I'm wondering if my friends and family would care to help sponsor a trip for me to invest what few dollars I have in Euros so as to afford us some financial stability in the event of a dollar collapse. I'm just gonna put it out there that that's what I'd like to do...
As far as setting up 5 year goals, it's a rather daunting task because there is no more status quo, we are in uncharted waters as a human civilization and I find myself among those who are calling for Western civilization to be assisted in its own suicide (if only to alleviate the pain and suffering of countless living humans and innocent animals). But I will be forming some solid 5 year goals that I know are achievable. ciao!

A reaction to Gas Price rage

A reaction to Gas Price rage:
The AP story by Tim Molloy (May 29, 2006) describes anger and frustruation directed at gas station attendants (who I suggest will be looking for protection if the level of hostility rises) shows a troublesome link to the values and ethics related to American disinformation about global peak oil.
The article does not mention the certainty of rising gas prices but does suggest,

"Consumers might finally be getting at least a temporary break at the pump. The latest figures released May 21 by the Lundberg Survey indicate the nationwide average price of self-serve regular fell about 1.45 cents in the previous two weeks to $2.93 a gallon — the first dip since the Feb. 24 price of $2.24 began to climb."

FEARS OVER SECURITY
The article mentions several crimes and a death as a result of gas pump rage. As the oil demand crisis continues, gas station security will come to the fore.
This scenario calls for a local level response for community policing advocacy and other measures to ensure reliable and safe access to fuel. On the other hand, government action to secure or monitor gas stations, if wholly transparent to the citizens, could also provide for resource protection.
The funding for resource protection by any means should derive wholly from large corporations that cannot function in a benevolent and community-focused environment. Any corporation accused or found guilty of resource abuses, whether human or natural, of wrong-doing against the common good, should expect to bear the burden of any remediation necessary, this should include institutions of slavery and other system difficiencies. The reality is, our present socio-economic system cannot be sustained. Which brings me to the anger part of this phenomenon.

In a previous post, I pointed out the irony of Judeo-Christian values based communities where much of the gas station hostility is occurring, in choosing to ignore the real problem which is our own consumption. Gas guzzlers are the problem, CONSUMPTION is the problem. It's not the person selling the gas that's responsible for the price - consumer demand is how the market functions. In good times and in bad times. A responsible press will illustrate this point clearly as fundamental to basic macro-economics. In a demand-side economy which we've now entered into as a function of peak oil, reducing our consumption is the only way to reduce the price. The only other alternative is to say that military invasion is justified to satiate our selfish interest for material wealth and comfort! What benevolence! What humility!? How righteous are those who force the rest of God's Creation and their own offspring to pay the price of gluttonous consumption? All in the name of profit?!

SEE ALSO: Religion and Oil

on the urban and rural divide: cultural and economic differences.

on meeting of the minds: discovering common themes.

on the message: what's missing in your life? I was thankful to read Jennifer Loven's article of March 18, 2006 <a href"http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060318/ap_on_go_pr_wh/bush_s_straw_men">"Bush Using Straw-Man Arguments in Speeches" because it touched on the one of the reasons why I cannot stand to listen to GW Bush. He is a right-wing political spin machine and the press hardly ever questions the horse shit that pours from his mouth daily.
You have a talented and courageous writer in Jennifer Loven and if she or the AP is being critized for this story I pray you will defend her excellent journalism and promote more of it. The world needs more writers like her and if you were to encourage her kind of responsible journalism, I might then be inclined to buy a daily paper here in Oregon which relies heavily on AP newswire. Otherwise, I will continue to lament the right wing corporate-driven "news" ie spin that plagues your newswire, especially concerning political critique and the struggle of Palestinians whose AP news reports are filtered by Israel.
The whole world knows the degree to which you are complicit in promoting or refusing to cover US imperialist actions such as the Humphreys military base expansion in the Peyongtaek region in S. They reside in my spirit and are not absolutely concrete yet are a series of conditions that are met with newfound wonder at each profound perception. One that I was not expecting but excited by the prospects for discovering new frontiers in humanity and the enjoyment thereof.
The world is full of horrible atrocities perhaps only so that we rely more heavily on the positive energy that is felt among gatherings of empowerment, love, and appreciation for all things natural and God-made.

As I venture into the future, my current place actually tells me I'm doing just fine, with a little more tweaking and minor adjustments needed. Perhaps there's more that I'm unfamiliar with and I hope God would speak to me through the guidance of my loved ones and guardian angels.

I once had a discussion about the worthiness of honoring deceased loved ones through prayer. I was talking to a Bible christian (a "Bible christian" is someone who believes that only what the Bible says is the only infallible word of God) who thought it wasn't "Christian" to pray for spirits of deceased relatives to comfort and guide those in the flesh. As if to say, "how can you assume they're an angel and didn't burn in hell?" the Bible christian considered the "worship" of anything other than God and Jesus Christ as our only Savior, or the calling in prayer for a loved one's spirit, was satanic or voodoo-ey (that's not really a word, I know).

But it makes me wonder where the boundaries are - how far (down the rabbit hole) can "Christianity" go? Even more so, can it unlock the existential questions that persist as a result of the behavior of other "Christians"

Well, the direction I'm choosing to head in: discovery, knowledge, exploration - this is the true manifest nature, the natural inquisitiveness of human nature - thriving within me. How can I earn money at it? Or do I even need to earn money doing it? To depend on the system or to disengage from it? The severing of a leaching parasite that contributes little to no benefit to its host is a solution - are we afriad that we won't be able to survive without the parasite attached?

We, the people have nothing to fear.
Do not be discouraged.
In a fight for truth, mercy, and love, death does not disarm you, it only makes you more powerful.

God will help us in the struggle for truth, mercy, and love if we ask Him for help.

Reflection on the Future - NYE 2006

It's new years eve

and time to offer some reflections. Currently, I'm listening to friend of my little brother downstairs in the basement. They arrived expecting to have a party and are asking why there's no ice in the icebox. My little brother is lying to himself and his family in order to say that he's not throwing a party - even though it may well happen.
I was put off by young men such as Chris and Darren and others who have a sense of entitlement about the future. It reminds me of the recent letters by Washington Post readers in today's Free for All. Laurence B. McCullough and Timothy Barnum respond to Robert J. Samuelson's Dec. 28 column, "Our Entitlement Paralysis." I found the Samuelson peice to be a fair portrayal of our current predicament. We cannot sustain the current Social Security when the Baby boomers retire, therefore we should rexamine the rationale for wealthy retirees to receive benefits.
It was the sense of entitlement that struck me. Baby Boomers through no perceivable forethought of their own, populated and developed the world according to their vision, a result of Manifest Destiny \ American Dream myth.
As we can see, the world is rejecting that worldview that says, I'm entitled to something if I paid for it. The wealth derived from war and turn of the century sweatshop industrialization, and the great depression was used to create capital for subjecting the world and its populations to the whim of the ruling elite class.
Now, we see the that capitalism depends on infinate growth through the burning of finite fossil fuels to sustain the current level of comfort and luxury for the ruling class and much of middle class USA.
What bothers me about the kids in the basement is they don't seem to get the big picture. I see them watching Ultimate Fighting Championship on New Years Eve, waiting for me to leave so they can start binge drinking and listening to really really shitty music.
I suppose some of my concern results from the fact that they treat me like an "adult" (and for the most part I feel compelled to act like one if only to show them a good example) which means that they are still very much kids. But they are commercialized and socialized kids, who do not seem to care about the true meaning of Christianity or to be concerned by the increasing suspensions of civil rights designed by our founding fathers to guard against oppression.
We've heard about the Washington state patriot test given to 10th graders. What we Gen X people are learning should be that an intervention is necessary with our younger brothers and sisters. We need to be active role models of community alliance and awareness. I was inspired by an Indymedia comment which directed readers to take action and then report on the experiences. That is truly what is needed to show our empowerment-needy brothers and sisters the way to gain the Future.

Beware Digital Spectrum Corporate Give-away

The debate about the digital spectrum sell-off and the requisite analog TV conversion raises serious questions about control over the airwaves which, at least in theory, belong to the public. In reality, we’re seeing that our airwaves are managed by a cumbersome federal government in collusion with multinational broadcast media corporations. It really is a fascist conspiracy that attempts to subvert public control over public assets, while kicking-back $3 billion to the corporations who control the media oligopoly. Although the digital spectrum conversion is intended to generate federal funds by the sale of unlicensed spectrum (around $10 billion have already been earmarked by King George II for deficit relief), the money would be better spent on our community media outlets and public broadcasting efforts.
The government does not have the consent of the governed in this case, if only due to the fact that very few people know what’s happening with our airwaves or our money –small wonder given that the commercial media companies have no interest in raising public awareness of this issue.
Bestowing greater control and the right to license or sell-off digital spectrum upon our local communities is the best way to serve the public interest. Local governments have the most accountability in elected officials and are best able to meet the needs and reflect the values of the community. The public interest is what airwaves are for, spectrum is not a commodity to be bought and sold to the highest bidder only to aid big government’s fiscal mismanagement. New unlicensed digital spectrum should be given to the communities that it will serve, to benefit the community directly without the federal middleman.

Solar mends "fraying electric supply"

letter to the Washington Post

It’s unfortunate that Peter Behr’s concern for our electric supply does not include encouragement for solar energy [“Powerless” Dec. 11, Outlook B5]. The most accessible form of renewable energy, provided daily without interruption, is not subject to the whims of deregulated power companies looking to maximize profits. Our elected officials can choose to install photovoltaic panels on government buildings and give businesses and homeowners incentives to do the same as is widespread in states such as California and Oregon. Solar power tied into the grid also bypasses the daily reliance on transmission lines to bring power from distant sources. Instead, the power is generated where it is being used eliminating the efficiency loss from high-tension lines. Furthermore, DC’s building height restriction is highly conducive to uniform installation standards. Solar power is a good first step towards creating energy independence – if only our elected officials could see the light.

Yes for "a la carte" cable options

Greetings

I am writing to offer my enthusiastic endorsement of FCC Chairman Kevin Martin’s suggestion of “a la carte” cable subscription options. As quoted in a Washington Post story by Arshad Mohammed [Business D1, Nov. 30] Martin’s Nov. 29 testimony to the Senate Commerce Committee Open Forum on Decency, “concludes that purchasing cable programming in a more a la carte manner in fact could be economically feasible and in consumers’ best interest.”

From a consumer’s perspective, I could not agree more. A la carte pricing, the cable subscription option whereby consumers pay for only the channels they want is the saving grace many consumers have been waiting for. Because I choose not to pay for offensive programming, I have been forced to refuse cable television altogether. Even basic cable packages include networks that air offensive or self-serving programs. It won’t be enough for the cable industry to self-regulate because I don’t believe they’re acting in the public’s interest in the first place.

Consider the arguments the cable industry executives use against a la carte pricing. “[I]t would reduce their advertising revenue [gasp!] and crowd out niche channels that would not attract enough viewers to survive if sold on their own.” Well, as a consumer, neither of these seem to affect the public interest. That is to say, most existing customers will likely keep their standard package for the flat rate – it’s hard to believe niche channels (most of which are owned by larger media conglomerates anyway) will suffer unnecessarily from a la carte pricing. In fact, the “niche” channels are simply a vehicle for advertising sales as I will explain below.

The cable industry is not entirely threatened by a la carte pricing as it turns out. Just a few days after Martin’s testimony, Cablevision Chairman Charles Dolan said he agrees with Martin that a la carte pricing is in the best interests of the consumer. As quoted on Redherring.com, Dolan states,

our experience indicates à la carte will result in a more affordable service for all with more programming options. [Chairman Martin’s] approach, in our view, is consistent with the best traditions of retailing in this country. Consumers should not be obliged directly or indirectly to buy services they do not want. Cablevision has expressed its support for à la carte over the years and in earlier testimony to Congress. We hope Chairman Martin’s remarks encourage a move by the industry in this direction.

But the odds are against the industry taking this action on its own. In a piece by Leslie Brooks Suzukamo,
Industry analyst Josh Bernoff of Cambridge, Mass.-based Forrester Research explains that networks force cable companies to buy their lesser channels in packages along with the good ones in order to sell more commercials. A la carte pricing would jeopardize this guaranteed advertising and he says, “the industry would do almost anything to prevent it.”

In a piece by Paul Kapustka,
another protect-the-status-quo research house, Legg Mason,
said in a report Tuesday that several economic factors -- including the fact that many cable channels might go out of business in an a la carte scheme, or that cable prices might rise -- will keep such ideas out of upcoming telecom reform legislation. "For now, the economic realities of such a requirement are likely to be too problematic for Congress to agree on legislation," the Legg Mason report concluded.

I’m struck by the argument this pro-industry report suggests: to save cable channels that might go out of business in an a la carte scheme, consumers must continue to subsidize “niche” channels they don’t even want – just so they can watch programs on a few channels they do want. What happened to free-market competition? If the channel can’t make money on it’s own merit, wouldn’t the invisible hand of capitalism replace it with a better alternative? Why are consumers obligated to pay for unwanted channels just to enable the industry to make more money?

It’s obvious that the cable industry does not want to cater to consumers, they want to sell advertising - but what recourse do consumers have against the giant media oligopoly? Several lawmakers including Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) are favoring a la carte pricing but because so many in Congress are bought out by or invested in the entertainment industry, we’ll have to wait until the new FCC report on a la carte pricing comes out.

In the meantime, I would urge those who want the right to refuse offensive media in your own homes to contact the FCC and your legislators to tell them this is option is important to you.

The Importance of Peak Oil

letter to the Portland Tribune

Thank you for Robert Pace’s take on peak oil. The real issue however, was missed. The end of cheap energy is not the problem, it’s the fact that most people, including our elected leaders are woefully ignorant of the real consequences of fossil fuel over-consumption. The response needs to be immediate and pervasive – LESS of everything. Americans are the biggest consumers of energy per capita, almost double that of Sweden, the next country on the list. When Pace suggests that the impact will affect how governments “do business” in the future, the reality of the situation is more urgent. Governments need to listen to and engage the people on this issue TODAY if they want to avoid severe and potentially violent consequences in the future. With the energy we have left today, we need to restructure our transportation, energy, and economic systems to thrive on local and regional scales. This issue is critical for everyone but especially if you have children. Portlandpeakoil.org is a great place to start.

STOP GLOBAL WARMING!

I've joined the virtual March on Washington to Stop Global Warming.

JOIN ME in the fight to save the Earth from our leaders' carelessness, greed, and ignorance. I am disheartened by accounts of anger and hostility directed at gas stations recently noted in an AP story. I would cite two deficiencies in the nation’s ability to properly inform its populace. The mainstream media seems reluctant to prepare consumers for this reality until the Bush Administration gives some indication to do so. The Times stands out as a worthy exception to this subterfuge.

Secondly, we should focus attention to our spiritual leaders for guidance. The Judeo-Christian texts have a recurrent theme of unrighteousness followed by wrath of God, followed by redemption or salvation for those who honored God during the unrighteousness. It is easy to see elements of antagonistic fundamentalist “Christian” leaders who suggest the US forcefully control other nations’ oil supplies – there’s no shortage of attention on these false prophets. But what we’re lacking as a nation is the compassion and mercy that will be necessary to see us through these times of tribulations – when angered by gas prices, don’t take it out on your neighbor!

The times are upon us when we need real spiritual guidance to show us the way. There are many ecumenical movements that recognize this and are creating real solutions, but they are not getting the proper attention from the media. Perhaps because the message of less consumption is not what people want to hear. No one wants to be told they can’t have their gasoline for $1.80. This is why we have aggressive motorists taking their fuel frustration out on others.

Sadad al-Husseini, the former Aramco executive says it is consumers, not producers who are to blame. This is only half the story - It would be entirely possible for producers to mandate, “for every barrel we produce for you today, we’re going to set aside one barrel for your children and one barrel for your grandchildren.” How could someone argue with that? The producers are equally to blame - although their children could profit enormously tomorrow when the barrel of oil is worth three times as much, they are choosing to meet a reckless demand so they can profit today.

The baby-boom generation and their parents have an insatiable appetite for personal comfort and wealth perhaps in part tied to the “American Dream,” and coupled with the notion of modern living through petro-chemistry. It is certainly up to religious and moral leaders to show us the error of our ways. The immense selfishness of consumers who believe they’re entitled to all the oil they want, and producers, who profit by giving it to them, will be our downfall.

The great will in our nation at war to make personal sacrifices is gone. Supposedly there’s a war on terror but Americans are not being led to do what is right for our energy independence – the media and our moral leaders are complicit in this failure. Every time we fill up the tank, a little bit of money heads towards religious extremists – Christian and Muslim, and they certainly want our money to finance their crusades and jihads. This county is becoming frazzled by greed and religious extremism, it’s past time for moderation. We must seek to foster compassion, sacrifice, and unity and address the real issues before us – the survival of our children. There’s a story about Abraham who went up to the mountain because God told him to sacrifice his son. God was testing him.

The alternatives to foreign oil are here in this country and they involve reducing our greenhouse gas emissions. While the jury is still out on the efficiencies of biofuels, we need to look at transportation infrastructure shifts to railroads and away from automobiles. Coupled with transportation and smart growth, we should emphasize local, sustainable farming, which will reduce food transportation costs. Alternative transportation, better mileage, and increased emission standards will all help. Thank goodness some of the states are getting it. It’s up to our moral leaders and the media to work together to pass this test.
Let’s pray God can see us through.

New Topic for Got Soul Radio?

A widely publicized document is now ready for public scrutiny with the hopes that a solid ethical debate about the priorities of government spending and focus can take place.
15 March 2005
FINAL COORDINATION (2) (pdf) - I guess this is the second part of the FINAL coordination. A 69-page Joint Chiefs of Staff document that basically says "If you don't express your loyalty to the US, you may be considered hostile and nuclear weapons can be used against you."

The US defense strategy
serves the national
objective of peace with
prosperity.

The US defense strategy aims to achieve four key goals that
guide the development of US forces capabilities [nuclear WMD], their
development and use:
assuring allies and friends of the US
steadfastness of purpose and its capability to fulfill its security
commitment; - who exactly is asking for this assurance? At this hour, there is no word from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as to who or when they will arrive but it could be within the next twenty-four to forty-eight hours or as late as Friday.

After a flurry of short-notice meetings on Sunday, the mechanisms and community leaders are in place to ensure a warm reception for our new guests. The initial greeting at Portland airport will take place at a specially-reserved hangar where identification, health screens, and rest and refreshment will be provided by the Red Cross and Portland Emergency Services, headed by Portland Fire Bureau’s Mike McGuire in a new position created by Mayor Tom Potter.

From the hangar, survivors will be bused to their new home at the former Washington-Monroe High School where they can expect hot showers, clean clothes, and hand cooked meals. Preparations to make that facility ready for comfortable habitation have been underway since Saturday. Mayor Potter said he first learned of the special guests’ pending arrival late Friday evening.
“It is a great testament to the strength and resilience of our community leaders and foundations that multiple short-notice meetings and actions could be carried out over Labor Day weekend,” said one participant.
At four o’clock residents from Buckman, Kerns, and Sunnyside neighborhood were gathered at Buckman Elementary where Potter introduced the cast of players in this great endeavor. On hand were representatives from the Red Cross, Salvation Army, Portland Public Schools, Portland Police Bureau, and the new Office of Emergency Management – this office receives direction from the Oregon Emergency Management Office which was initially contacted by FEMA on Friday. On-site services which will be available besides food and clothing will be phone, internet, medical, job assistance, and school registration. The group fielded many questions, but this reporter was most alarmed by the questions for personal safety from unruly survivors. One resident from Sunnyside, Mary Ann Schwab, asked whether there will be background checks to ensure that child molesters aren’t introduced into the neighborhood. The president of Kerns Neighborhood inquired, “Are we going to be safe?”

One can speculate as to whether these poor souls were watching Fox or Headline News for the basis of their prejudice, but concerns for civil liberties were put to rest by Police Chief Derrick Foxworthy, “We cannot require that US citizens undergo background checks.” As to the concerns by self-interested neighbors for their security, this reporter would suggest getting to know their neighbors first before casting judgment. As if they haven’t endured enough, this city would be ashamed to alienate our most honored guests, and fortunately our faith community is fully prepared to council the weak, the poor, and the sick at heart.

(I hauled tail on my bicycle up to NoPo and miraculously found the next meeting location despite erroneous address given by Mayor staffperson)
At five o’clock, religious and community leaders from North Portland convened at the new Emmanuel Temple on N. Sumner. Potter and most of the same line-up presented the background information and the citizens and clergy piped up with questions concerning “what can we do” and how to maintain cultural sensitivity. There it was decided to ensure that community members will be present on each joint committee tasked by the agencies. These committees presently include operations and security, medical services, media relations, transportation, logistics, education, and public relations as well as a community advisory committee. The committees will evolve over the course of the re-habitation, as the needs of the survivors evolve in adapting to a new community or re-locate elsewhere. Several leaders have indicated that we all should be prepared for many guests that will want to be accepted as permanent residents.
Of the more exciting committees, formed by Joyce Harris, is the Welcoming Committee which plans to ensure that cultural and spiritual resources are available immediately and that the multitude of weary travelers are treated with respect and dignity at every step. That is the one paramount concern of every agency working here in Portland, that each and every survivor is given the respect of a fellow human being who has been subjected to hellish conditions and who need as much support as they need to feel human again.
This will truly be one of the greatest humanitarian efforts ever undertaken by the City - probably since the Vanport flood, where, perhaps not coincidentally, it was African-Americans who were devastated by failed levees and poorly treated in response. Portland has the great honor and blessing to cherish these survivors in our midst and honor them in person for enduring what no man, woman, or child should ever have to endure. No one should question the suggestion by House Speaker Dennis Hastert that New Orleans may never be completely rebuilt. An event such as Katrina which demonstrates the full power of God means that it’s possible we did something wrong.

It is fundamental to consider the geography that God intended for this area and to honor that natural way would be most wise. When the nation’s head has run full force into a brick wall – why back up and run into it again? That’s stupidity – and that’s what rebuilding New Orleans is about if certain interests have their way. It is also important to consider the costs of enduring such a devastating disaster again. Our national recovery efforts should be aimed at the salvage and relocation of a large portion of low-lying communities.

The fact is, New Orleans is mostly below sea-level and prone to hurricanes which may increase in their severity. This combination suggests that humans should not make their homes in this area in such dense and immovable dwellings with all the requisite infrastructure. We should seriously consider the Mississippi delta as a primarily agriculture zone with low population density and inexpensive or durable infrastructure such as railroads for shipping.

Long-term or semi-permanent structures must be designed with flooding in mind and must have flood insurance. It absolutely boggles the mind how one could own a home below sea-level and not have flood insurance.

Salvage, relocation, and minimal infrastructure economy should be the centerpeices of our national recovery efforts. New Orleans should be a great city, but this is our opportunity to wipe clean the poverty and desperation that has plagued that city for so long. And for Mississippi to be making half a million dollars per day on gambling revenues (according to CNN) – that is just shameful. Do they not read the Holy Bible down there in Mississippi? I thought politicians from there were always touting the Scriptures for policy guidance. I think the Bible says gambling is a no-no. Folks, it’s time to get back to respecting that which God has given us. Even if you’re atheist, we all must share in our respect for this beautiful natural world, which has been given to us. It is a gift, and we would be wise to honor this Creation and center our lives around that love for God and all His things. We’re damned to think life should be centered around ourselves. I am disheartened by accounts of anger and hostility directed at gas stations recently noted in an AP story. I would cite two deficiencies in the nation’s ability to properly inform its populace. The corporate media seems reluctant to prepare consumers for this reality until the Bush Administration gives some indication to do so.

But what we’re lacking as a nation is the compassion and mercy that will be necessary to see us through these times of tribulations.

This is when we need real spiritual guidance to show us the way. There are many ecumenical movements that recognize this and are creating real solutions, but they are not getting the proper attention because their message is not what people want to hear. No one wants to be told they can’t have their gasoline for $1.80. This is why we have aggressive gas-guzzlers taking their frustration out on others.

The baby-boom generation and their parents have an insatiable appetite for personal comfort and wealth – modern living through petro-chemistry. It is certainly up to religious and moral leaders to show them the error of their ways.

The alternatives to foreign oil are here in this country and they involve reducing our greenhouse gas emissions – this is not ethanol, which is yet unproven (but heavily subsidized because of the “Red” corn states). Rather we need to look at transportation infrastructure shifts to railroads and the use of biodiesel fuels. Coupled with that, localized sustainable farming practices reduces food transportation costs. Alternative transportation, better mileage, and increased emission standards will all help. Thank goodness some of the states are getting it. It’s up to our moral leaders and the media to work together to pass this test.
Let’s pray God can see us through.

The irony is, the behavior of the consumers, particularly American consumers, is anti-Christian. So here is America, a supposedly great Christian nation, waging hostility and aggression on nations such as Iraq, Iran and Venezuela, because of her selfish want of oil – to a true Christian, this behavior is disgusting and sinful.

There are many false prophets such as Pat Robertson who advocate for greed and selfishness, these poor souls have given in to temptations of the flesh, they want more and newer shiny things to make them feel worthy. Again, they are all deceived by the devil. It is not material wealth that Christ wants for His followers – it is Spiritual wealth. Unfortunately this nation’s conservative so-called “Christian” leaders are all about the bling bling. It is clear that our political elite are beholden to the Satan within multi-national capitalism or “vulture” capitalism wherein the drive is to consume or “acquire” competitors. They went down to the crossroads on K Street in Washington and sold their soul to the devil. In lining their pockets with kickbacks, our Federal government has abandonded the people its members swore to serve.

Pat Robertson and the perversions of religion.

An excellent treatment of the anti-christ in "vulture capitalism" and its inherent perversion of Christianity. My concern is the serious dereliction of public interest and accountability in providing news information that the public has expressed interest in. The response from the Sinclair representative Diane Walker seems to be - we only provide certain "news" stories that we want to provide.
I am including the query and response for your discernment. This failure to be accountable to the public is a serious issue for a broadcast licensee such as Sinclair - I hope you will take immediate action to suspend or revoke WRLH-TV's license - In any event, I respectfully ask this complaint be included in the file for WRLH-TV and for WWBT-TV NBC12 - although I'm not sure how Ms. Walker works for both as NBC12 claims to be owned by Jefferson Pilot Corporation while WRLH is owned by Sinclair Broadcasting - any explanation on this "news share" would be useful in determining public accountability. I have included information from the WRLH website below the e-mail exchange. I would ask that you evaluate the substance of Diane Walker's response in light of the claims made by their website. I look forward to your reply.

copy of e-mail exchange:

From: April Kung [ @yahoo.com] Sent: Wednesday, August 17, 2005 2:01 PM To: Comments@foxnews.com; Diane Walker; Curt Autry Subject: Fox News Richmond

Ever since moving to Richmond several years ago I have made the occasional unfortunate mistake of wasting an evening watching Fox News at 10. Each time I find myself equally disgusted by the nonsense that your network parades as "news."

Material concerning Madonna's fall from a horse, Dick Clark's plans for next New Year's eve, the fact that P Diddy is shortening his name to just plain "Diddy," a boat made entirely from popsicle sticks, people getting married at fast-food drive-throughs... What purpose do any of these stories serve that, in any way, justifies them as news?

And how do you justify your status as a news program in an alleged democracy while wasting valuable air-time on such irrelevant and inane drivel while serious issues that affect the lives of Americans go unmentioned and unquestioned?

What does it matter that administrators of a local elementary school altered SOL test answers if news programs such as yours do nothing to foster the development of, and inform, an educated and critical thinking audience?

What of the new energy bill and its impact on the people of this country and the world? Sinclair's television group includes FOX, WB, ABC, CBS, NBC, and UPN affiliates and reaches approximately 25.0% of all U.S. television households.

If Diane Walker's response is sincere, how could she love to have April Kung as a regular viewer if WRLH does not report the news Ms. Kung is seeking to learn? Furthermore and most important - Walker asserts Kung is "free to choose where you get your news," but this isn't much consolation when Sinclair owns WB, ABC, CBS, NBC, and UPN affiliates. I hope you understand my point. The enormous market advantage enjoyed by Sinclair means that they must be held to a very high standard of public interest - to ignore complaints and direct viewers to get their news elsewhere is unacceptable behavior. This is precisely the reason why these two licensees should be suspended immediately. I lived in Charlottesville, VA for seven years and can attest to the meaningless FOX reporting described by Kung.Thank you for your prompt attention in this matter.

Faith and our Communities

God made us as communal beings. We have depended on each other to survive for Millennia. The family is our basic structure. But it is our extended family, our community that we rely on for survival. God teaches us to love each other, that is the Golden Rule. Love everyone else as much as you love yourself. But today we don’t really apply this rule when it comes to possessions of luxury and comfort. We somehow seem to think that God says it’s OK to live in extreme comfort and convenience even when others in our community have much less and are often facing difficult burdens. Does this happen every day in America? You’d better believe it. But how have we become so focused on our own personal convenience, comfort, and even wealth?
It’s all around us isn't it?
Everyone one else is doing it and that’s just how it is. We’re born into it, like Romans born into the Proletariat. And it just seems normal. But not only is it all around us, it’s glamorized. Yes that’s right, all the slick executives on Madison Avenue make it sexy and attractive – a status symbol for us to achieve the American dream. They say success is having material wealth. When you can look like a Rock-star, then you're someone important.
But there is great injustice in this lifestyle of consumption, because for many, we loose sight of God’s word, love thy neighbor. And where there is power and wealth, just like in the Roman senate, there is corruption. Corruption is caused by greed. Greed is self-importance in spite of the rest of the community - placing your prosperity ahead of the basic needs of those in your community. In other words, we’re exploiting others for our benefit. And the bigger your community is, the more harm comes to the ones you’ve sinned against. Because when you do something in your own interests, you’re ignoring the interests of everyone else around you. And were not talking about private time, which is really meant to be time alone with God.
But I’m talking about what you do by your actions towards others. If your actions in the community are for the benefit of yourself while you ignore the needs of others, then you’re not living for God, you’re living for yourself. And all the luxuries and comforts that you provide for yourself are ways in which you show love to yourself. And to some extent that’s ok, but when the desire for those comforts grows larger than the desire to love thy neighbor, then we’ve got some thorns growing around our heart. Because the thorns say to everyone else – keep back, this heart belongs to me and I’m in control, I’ll decide who I’m going to share it with…
God wants us to be happy. He wants us to be successful but not at the expense of others. As long as we honor His word truth and mercy, give thanks and praise he will guide our path to success. The greatest way we can worship God and live with God on Earth is to follow in the steps of His son Jesus Christ, and all the saints and prophets who have lived and have yet to grace us with their presence here on Earth. Jesus was sent by God to show us the way. And all that follow Him will be saved.
God’s heavenly spirit and his body here on earth – that’s you and me brothers and sisters, must exist as one, and He must have the space in our hearts so we can love each other. That’s all He really asks of us. He wants us to surrender our selves to Him. I must surrender those earthly possessions and desires that consume and possess me, and keep me from living His Holy Word: Mercy and Truth. Amen.

self_porch

 self_porch
Originally uploaded by jb1touch.
I’ve been taught a great lesson tonight (but it really is the culmination of my life understanding – seeing as it has occurred most recent to me).
From time to time it is necessary for the preservation of human consciousness to disengage from one’s reality and explore the possibilities of humankind from perspectives different from one’s own.
It’s the experiences and thought transformations suggested, that help to create a greater appreciation for all of God’s creation. We are all alike in so many ways. Some are more able to share stories and relate to a greater variety of humans than others who have not yet opened themselves to the possibility of our human condition. We all need certain loves and acceptance, we all need spiritual guidance to navigate the unknown world – which paradoxically is a different reality for each human being. For those seeking to learn divine inspiration and understanding, the end result should always be universal and unconditional love for everything on this planet.

with each passing hour

It seems I grow more enamored by Portland as I remember the fond appreciations that grew here. They are the little things - brief interactions on the bus, passing new neighbors on the street, they feel like the things that make a community - each individual keenly yet almost unconsciously aware - we are all part of a community. We as individuals color this beautiful peoplescape that is inspiring and endearing at the same time. There is social and/or natural stimulation at every corner.
I got my bike back today and was fully grateful for the fact that good use was made of it in my absence. It's almost like an instrument being played continually instead of being hidden in a closet somewhere (like my bass at mothers'). I'm grateful to Mike as he is to me and that's just beautiful.
A wonderful time was had by all tonight as Tara made an excellent soup and salad while Michael provided artwork stimulation and Matthew provided musical conversation, Lucy and Alex shared fabulous stories of Minnesota.

a shift of focus

Today I started an internship with Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon. I will appreciate my co-workers who are both very intelligent and delightful ladies about twenty years older than I. On the same day, I've just met my boarding host for the duration of the internship, she is twelve years my senior and is a PR manager for Tri-met here in Portland. She happily admits that she lives in one of the most diverse neighborhoods in Portland, although I would guess that the gentrification happening in St. Johns is creating a bit more of a socio-economic spread. Nevertheless, I am delighted to be among fellow humans in the struggle against the man. Big brother will soon be watching if the Patriot Act is extended.
I feel I must divert much of my attention however to the job at hand. Catharine (my fellow intern) and I have been tasked with some PR and outreach already and we both feel we've been tossed right into the thick of it. But this is nice, Our supervisor Jenny is friendly but overwhelmed with work and there is much to be done. We are all grateful for these endeavours shall prove uplifting and educational by the end.
Today we had the priveledge of observing an energy audit by Doug who is a solar power consultant. The Zen Buddhist space we visited was very well kept and organized. The refrigerator was home to some sublime magnet phrases, but none which I can remember offhand. I learned about the basic design and function of the photovoltaics which operate much like a series of batteries being charged by the sun. A persistent shadow over a portion of the cells will cause the series to become interrupted and will cease to function properly. Therefore it is best to have an unobstructed south-facing roof for best deployment. We also learned today that available solar power in the Pacific NW is relatively equal to the rest of the country on an annual basis. The humidity of the East and Mid-west summers reduce the effect of sunrays on the modules. And of course the climate is milder here with less temperature extremes which means the energy required to condition the building is less. Doug is very cool and Catharine and I enjoyed our time with him and Kakumyo of the Zen Buddhists.
I was grateful for the chance to discuss theology with Catharine who studied it in college and was a Woodstock hippie back in the day. She's a member of United Church of Christ which I was eager to learn more about. I also inquired about Assembly of God and she felt that the two are worlds apart in terms of faith. I increasingly feel that greater extremes of faith can exist under the breadth of Christianity than there are between some sects of Christian, Muslim, and Judaism.
Well in all honesty, Jesus taught us such a good and simple way of life, I don't really understand anything that perverts His message in any way. Catharine spoke of a teacher of theology who termed this way as Christ -ean, to cleanse the word Christian from the mainstream orthodox dogma.
On the bus ride home, I spoke with a young lady who was on her way to church. I asked about her congregation and she said they were very inclusive in their membership and that they had a band and a choir. She invited me to go and told me where it was but I can't remember the name. I will check out the Ainsworth UCC this sunday, depending on what Dustin wants to do. Then the other church on Sunday next. Praise God.

A sticky situation for Journalists - what about integrity?

open message to freepress.net

I've lost so much respect for Free Press. I've just read your appeal for a federal sheild law for reporters who protect whistleblowers. That sounds fine but you're using Miller and Cooper as examples for why we need this. I find that just simply OUTRAGEOUS and DISGRACEFUL! Shame on you. Don't you understand that these reporters are not protecting whistleblowers? This is such a complicated issue with these two and you're glossing it over implying that they're trying to protect whistleblowers - who are you? Some Karl Rove operative? This is disgusting and I sincerely hope you reframe your appeal. Have you seriously looked into what Miller and Cooper did and their relationship to the administration? I doubt if you'd be portraying them as some kind of martyr if you knew. I'm sorry for the tirade but this is so low and deceitful. Perhaps you can clarify why Miller and Cooper are deserving of federal protection. I'd love to hear your story. If you'd like to hear another side to the story please visit the dailykos.
I look forward to your reply.

On Thursday JULY 14 FreePress.net Responds:

Free Press' (www.freepress.net) position opposing the jailing of journalists and supporting a national shield law was taken after significant debate and consideration. As a result of the overzealous federal prosecutor in the Plame case, no reporter will be able to promise confidentiality to a source. The national shield law we are supporting would safeguard reporters' ability to protect their sources unless there was no other way to obtain information for a criminal investigation. Such protections already exist in over 35 states --and they should be extended to the federal courts. But more important than the particulars of one case is the larger principle at stake: without the ability to shield the identity of a whistleblower or source, investigative journalism would be impossible. No reporter who wants to do real journalism can function if their sources can't trust them. Nobody from inside the government -- regardless of their political affiliation -- is going to step forward if they can't be protected. It is doubful that another Deep Throat would step forward today without a shield. If a crime was committed in the Plame case, the prosecution should be pursuing those culpable -- not the journalists who they tried to manipulate. The fact that Karl Rove and Judith Miller are involved in the Plame case is obscuring the big picture. Reporters and whistleblowers must be protected or journalism will get even worse and those in power will be even harder to hold accountable. A reporters' promise of confidentiality is a cornerstone of a free press.

"Public" Broadcasting?

letter to the LA Times

RE The GOP inside PBS, June 26, Can someone please explain how an organization that is supposed to be non-partisan can have a Republican chairman and president? Is there anything "public" in the Corporation for Public Broadcasting aside from our money? I propose having CPB recipients, i.e. station managers, elect or approve the Chair and President who will be doling out the public’s money. Christian Miller's account of US contractors being detained by US Marines (US Marines Detained 19 Contractors in Iraq, A10, June 8) could have used more facts and less "he said, she said." I am still left wondering about the apparent conflict of interest between contractors or "soldiers of fortune" and the US military. It seems that aside from being shot at, the Marines have more reasons to resent the presence of American mercenaries. The article briefly mentions lack of clarity regarding legal accountability but does not investigate further or seek comment from an official. There is a comment from Zapata (the contracting firm) indicating that "they followed the rules that are required when working as a contractor in Iraq" but we aren't given any clue as to what those rules are. Mr. Miller is reporting from Washington, surely it wouldn't be too hard to track down these rules for contractors and clue us in.
Finally, attorney Mark Schopper is claiming that the mercenaries relatives received threatening phone calls from people with American accents. Now I'm not a lawyer but I would strongly doubt that Mr. Schopper will even try to submit that as evidence if he plans on litigation.
It just seems that this article is lacking thoroughness in facts and is filled with emotionally charged accusations and denials. At the very least we deserve a follow-up explaining the reason for tension between contractors and Marines and the rules for contractors.

Writers of Conscience

This morning I had dream about a great movement. More people were writing with their hearts and not with their minds. The truths of conscience proved that humans can be compassionate and loving towards each other. The rationale for war was overwhelmed by the cries for love and mercy. The writers of Conscience were here to save us from our calculating, rational minds. We need more teachers like Christ instead of more would-be tyrants like Machiavelli. We can only live by one example. Those who proclaim themselves as Christians while unjustly accumulating wealth and power at the price of others' lives and liberty, are they not the biggest hypocrites of our time? The evangelism coming from Colorado Springs is unholy and overrun by false prophets. God will be their judge but we who know Christ must stand for what is true in our hearts. Love, Compassion, Mercy.

Scary fascist philosophy in Baltimore

Letter to the Baltimore Sun
I was appalled to read Sara Neufeld’s account of high school classroom attention on Watergate (June 3, 2005). Carnegie Corporation president Vartan Gregorian recently stated, "I believe there are two professions that are the most crucial for democracy, and are needed to make it safe: teaching and journalism."
What do statements by Cantonsville High School philosophy students say about the quality of our education with respect to democracy? At the top was a news clip stating a release by the CDC (Center for Disease Control) which indicates that some effects of obesity may have been overstated or exaggerated. The ad then followed with words such as "epidemic," crossed out. At the bottom of this list of crossed out words was the word in bold red, "hype?"
I noticed this ad as I departed the train and was not able to see the sponsor. I strongly believe an advertisement of this nature does nothing to serve the public but only confuses the issue of good public health. I would like to know which organization paid for this ad so I may take my concern directly to them. I should also caution the Board of Directors to enact greater controls for ad content standards. Ads such as this could generate negative PR, which Metro would be wise to avoid. Does Metro have an official with authority to screen or reject advertising sold by Viacom Outdoor? If not, I would suggest working with Viacom Outdoor to create one or implement strict guidelines to insure that messages on trains truly serve the public if they are not selling a product. We all should recognize that serious health risks do accompany obesity and to make light of those risks is harmful and offensive to many. I appreciate your timely response to these concerns and your swift removal of this attack ad on public health.

Krauthammer unworthy of Post column

In response to Charles Krauthammer's op-ed appearing in Washington Post Friday June 3, 2005

Let’s get one thing straight Charles, there is absolutely no self-flagellation going on regarding the abuse at Guantanamo. Bush has vehemently denied any wrongdoing and has in fact denounced his critics as misled. In fact, misled is the way Bush would have us all remain if it weren’t for morally conscious people. Your initial statement about full-scale panic is ludicrous. If there is any panic going on, it is in the conscience of true Christians who are beginning to realize that Bush and his supporters are engaging in evil, inhumane, and torturous practices and then lying about it. Shame on you to point the finger at other terrorists and say "but look what they’re doing" as a justification for US injustice. "We know that al Qaeda operatives are trained to charge torture when they are in detention," is that true and verified Mr. Krauthammer? Were you at the training?
As far as your scale of human crimes is measured, I daresay that killing 2,973 people (not all have been confirmed as innocent) is the absolute worst. And what of holding innocent people incommunicado indefinitely, for years even? You may forget that no charges have been brought against many of the detainees and only recently have they been granted access to counsel after the Supreme Court ruled against the Bush administration. In your attempts to legitimize abuse of "infidels" you’re suggesting they are would-be terrorists and they must be detained until the war on terror is over. When will that be Mr. Krauthammer, when all the would-be terrorists are dead? Can you understand that all US terror-suspect-detention facilities are operating in defiance of international law? If you want to talk about hypocrisy Mr. Krauthammer, we should talk about liberty. Because that’s what the ACLU is fighting for and that’s what the Bush administration is trying to deny, even though he says the US is fighting for it. Whether it’s free speech or freedom from illegal detention, I’m thankful that we have those freedoms, and we should be insisting on those provisions for everyone without deprivation of due process. As for discrimination and concern for civilian safety, I don’t think killing an innocent Iraqi couple in front their children is exemplary. We Americans have hardly seen a true picture of the war because of voluntary media censorship (in the interest of good taste and corporate profit) so I’m not sure how you can make such a claim about the entire global war on terrorism. In the end, your column is just plain garbage and I’ll be sure to never read it again unless you’re trying to trash freedom of the press, in which case I should like to respond again. I will pray that you consider the words and deeds of Jesus Christ when you’re talking about humane treatment of others. You may discover that Bush is no Christian by his deeds, nor is anyone who would support him.

Mark Lloyd on Media Bias and the Future of the Freedom of the Press

This beautifully written testimony sums up the challenge and impetus for media reform.

This material was created by the Center for American Progress

Statement of Mark Lloyd
Senior Fellow Center for American Progress
May 24, 2005
[Congressional] Forum on "Media Bias and the Future of the Freedom of the Press"

I am former broadcast journalist. I worked at local stations and national networks, including NBC and CNN and then represented all sorts of communications companies as an attorney here in Washington. I spent two years teaching at MIT and am now teaching at the Georgetown Public Policy Institute. I am a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress.
I want to thank the people’s congressman John Conyers and the rest of the public servants joining us today for holding this forum. The problem of media bias is not simply a matter of taste, it is a problem of life or death, of peace or war, of solving our problems or descending into confusion. There is no greater or more urgent problem facing America. So thank you again.
What is media bias? Bias is the ideological distortion of information. Is there media bias? Of course. Is it new? Of course not.
We have forgotten the yellow journalism that led us into war with Spain at the beginning of the 20th century. We have forgotten the media bias that led to the persecution of Paul Robeson and the promotion of Joe McCarthy. We have forgotten that most journalists supported the war in Vietnam for the vast majority of the time we were there, and ignored the problems of the ghettoes and barrios until the riots of the 1960's. No bias is not new.
Most of the critiques of media on the left or the right tend to focus on a perceived partisan bias. But the problem is much deeper than that. The problem of bias is built into our current system. Our communication system supports a vibrant commercial media but ignores the needs of a government of the people. The bias inherent in such a system promotes the agenda of corporations not citizens.
I think most Americans are right to expect news organizations to be fair, even-handed and respectful but persistent and tough with our public servants. I think most Americans are right to want news organizations to select news and to select the experts who speak about events or policies in a way that treats all reasonable sides fairly. This is an ideal, and however distant, I think this is an ideal that is right to strive for . . . it is a democratic ideal.
But our peculiar American system of communication says that whoever has the most money will be the loudest voice in the public debate. Is this the sort of system that leads to fairness?
The focus of my remarks today will be on what I think of as a core problem, not the speech that results because of that core problem. I will also propose that the solution to the problem of bad speech is not censorship but better speech.

The founders of our democracy would say that debate dominated by any one faction in our society is not sufficient to the needs of democracy. With our relatively recent focus on the first amendment to the constitution, we forget that even before it was amended the founders created a mechanism that supported the communication of all Americans . . . it was called the Post Office. The Post Office was the largest part of the federal republic under the founders. It was larger than the army or the treasury. It was larger and more robust than any other advanced nation in the world.
When Alexis de Tocqueville wrote about democracy in America, newspapers were highly ideological, highly partisan and carried by the U.S. Post Office at a discount. Moreover, newspapers were delivered free to other newspaper publishers so that news could spread.
Newspaper distribution was subsidized by business and personal correspondence in Jefferson’s America. The founders established a system that promoted diverse communication as a way to check and balance different political factions. And they understood that merchants and bankers were a political faction.
It is true that we live in more complex times. And in many ways we live in times that are far more open and democratic than the time of the founders. But I think there are important lessons in the fact that the founders placed such importance on constructing a communications system that made truly diverse and equal political communication possible. Our current structure of communications is far off the democratic course established by the founders.

Before I am misunderstood, let me repeat that the one faction dominating our political conversation is not the radical right and it is certainly not the few remaining public figures willing to be called liberal. Multinational corporations dominate the political conversation in the U.S. today.
These multinational corporations are provided a tax structure that promotes their lifeblood . . . advertising. They are given free licenses to use the public airwaves. They are given access to our streets and alleys. And what is most important to Viacom, the News Corporation, General Electric, Disney, Comcast and, yes, even the New York Times is whether at the end of the quarter they turn a profit. That’s what counts.
If Americans do not understand one another because of the distortions or omissions in the news, NBC will not lose their access to public property. If Americans and countless civilians in other countries lose their lives because of the drumbeat for war, FOX will not be punished. The New York Times will not be held responsible for focusing on Whitewater and passing on lies about weapons of mass destruction.
Let me be clear that I believe in the importance of a competitive commercial press unrestrained by government. But we need more. We need a media responsible to promote democratic dialogue. We need media independent of corporations.

If we really want news we can trust, we must create a structure that makes it possible and we must pay for it. One way to do this is to require commercial media to pay full fare for their access to public resources and use that money to fully support public service media in the U.S. A modern equivalent of the post office would be independent from both partisan and corporate pressure, unlike our current structure. And, unlike our current structure, it must be truly accountable to local communities through democratic means.
I would say these steps were radical, if they were not consistent with the founders of our republic. And unless we take these steps, we can only expect a continuation of the sort of yellow journalism we are experiencing today.

clubbing's in the house on Monday night BET

At 2:06 AM pitbull was aired on BET
followed by blowin up phatty koo.
Pepsi commercial- fanstastic voyage pimped out humvee delivery truck
followed by the smaller hummer commercial - showing perfect parallel park.
pantene shampoo color radiance 2 black women
Bounty paper towl 2 black kids.
Pringles commercial - white elites at a resort
Vibeline 18009611000 it's off the hook"try it free!"
Access granted R Kelly - musical mini drama
MLB in HI-DEF Comcast
Comcast MLB HI-DEF
Health insurance Prudent Choice 100% guaranteed and $300 free.
log onto BET
The Bentley Coupe - Ashanti

in the beginning... there were questions

And thus I enter the world of blog. I would like to point out that my generation of X-ers were among the first to publish on-line journals courtesy of our university servers back in 1996. At the time there was considerable resistance from certain peers who viewed our personal homepages as a pathetic attempt at personal ads. Obviously they didn't see the potential, and e-mail was more "all the rage" at the time.
Anyways here we are and why it's taken me so long to get back into the on-line journal I can't really say. I do feel that we, as intelligent beings, should be contributing to a greater discourse regarding the current state of affairs and so here is my attempt. I should also point out that I have no idea how to cull the good blogs from the various "junk" out there. Is there a place where blog abstracts are listed by quality of discussion? I hope someone will get back to me on that. It'd be nice to be a part of a good idea-exchange. Additionally, what's the best medium to incorporate RSS and XML technology? Currently, I am using MyYahoo! but the ads and other crap is distracting to say the least. For that matter, is blogger.com capabale of RSS feeds and such? Thanks for offering feedback, I am quite the blog-novice - as information technology changes, we are all continually having to learn new protocols but alas,
the "mind-race" is never finished.

NY Times delivers anti-democracy propaganda

Letter to the NY Times Ombudsman April 26
...with response by Ombudsman Byron Calame

Dear Editor,
I read Juan Forero’s article, "US considers toughening stance toward Venezuela," of April 26 with great alarm. The US government is proposing financing private foundations and businesses with tax-payer dollars for the sole purpose of undermining a fellow democratic government. This has happened in the past and is not too shocking to see it again, but what is most alarming is that the Times couldn’t put any names to the American official quotes or provide details about which organizations will be receiving the money. In essence, this is our tax money being diverted to covert operations to undermine democracy with no accountability. You report, " A multiagency task force in Washington has been working on shaping a new approach, one that high-ranking American policy makers say would most likely veer toward a harder line." Why do you not mention any of the task force agencies? How can you not name any of the high-ranking American policy makers or describe what "a harder line" could entail? You take pains to avoid criticism of US administration policy, "United States support for groups that Chavez supporters say oppose the government has been a source of tension in the past. Under the plans being considered, American officials said, that support may increase." Who are these tension-causing groups? Is it so secret you can’t mention them on the pages of the New York Times? Better yet, do you think these groups may have something to do with the cold relationship endured by US ambassador William Brownfield? Isn’t it telling that a sympathetic Congressman, Rep. Delahunt, who respects Venezuelan sovereignty, enjoys multiple visits with Chavez himself while Bush appointees can hardly get their foot in the door? Alas, your lack of substance continues, "Already counternarcotics programs have suffered, American officials noted." What do you mean? Describe which counternarcotics programs and how they’ve suffered! Which American officials should we direct our concerns to?
To finally drive home your GOP-pandering propaganda, your photo and caption has absolutely nothing to do with the article. The story focus is about the US considering financing operations to disrupt a sovereign democracy in response to not getting what the Bush Administration wants; but the editors have allowed a photo of Venezuelan soldiers - which spins the story completely around to make it appear that Chavez is preparing a threat for the US. A complete reversal! Read the headline and look at the photo – it should be US black-ops training in the jungle! How awful of your editors to let this version of a story print. Let us not forget the reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., "a threat to justice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." The threat is here in our own "elected" government but according to the Times, it has no face and we might never know who’s trying to overthrow Venezuelan democracy. Democracy-loving people everywhere must be pleading - you cannot let this kind of deplorable "journalism" appear on your pages.

On May 24, 2005 Public Editor Byron Calame writes,

I'm sorry for the delay in responding to your e-mail. I became the public editor on Monday.
I share your frustration with the lack of named sources and players in this story, which makes it difficult for you as a citizen to hold them accountable. But I don't think it panders to the Bush administration.
The Times is continuing to search for ways to reduce the number of anonymous sources in the paper and online. A re-reading of your message suggests that there was enough information in the article to confirm you already-held belief that democracy in Venezuela is being threatened by U.S. actions--including some that may be covert. So it would seem to have had some value to you.
I'm unable to recall the online display of the story and the picture you mention, so I can't address that issue. I will pass a copy of this exchange along to a senior editor at NYTimes.com to let them know you felt the picture showing Venezuelan military personnel was misleading.

Sincerely,
Byron Calame
Public Editor
The New York Times

Navasky is spot on...

Letter to the LA Times

Kudos for Victor Navasky's piece re: Objectivity is highly overrated (April 24). The public relies on journalists and the free press to make subjective sense of the facts. There’s simply too much information, let alone dis-information, being regurgitated by the press in the name of objectivity. Without journalists to make sense of the stories, the public is left with no greater insight than before the report of objective facts. It’s the journalists’ obligation to present subjective framework or context which make sense of the facts. Otherwise, the average American is too busy to fit the pieces together and the news ultimately means nothing. To be a democracy of quality we need quality of discourse. To be fair to David Westin and ABC, whose news programs could use more information and less sensationalism, his remarks seem well-suited to television news shows which currently hold very little informative value.

Conservative Christians - Always ready to annihilate their adversaries...

Letter to the LA Times

Dear Editor,
RE: Frist initiative creates Rift in GOP base, April 24. Why do radical Republicans in the Senate feel they must go nuclear instead of seeking compromise? In choosing to force controversial judicial appointments by scrapping the filibuster, 51 Republicans are representing the interests of whom exactly? I hear no one besides conservative Christian groups supporting the so-called nuclear option. I’m baffled by the severity of such drastic measures caused by a single powerful special interest. Surely there are enough good Christian judges who are qualified for the federal bench on which we can all agree? Why bring the Senate to destruction? Prior to the "Justice Sunday" simulcast featuring Senator Frist, I’m betting most of the church-going audience has very little knowledge about the nominees themselves or what their rulings suggest about their views. Judging by the nature of the broadcast (which was to portray Democrats using the filibuster against people of faith), I doubt if viewers will be anymore informed if just plain angry and ready to pledge money for TV ads supporting the nuclear option. This particular judicial matter has very little to do with religion however; the nominees seem more concerned with protecting inter-state commerce, relaxing environmental regulations, and eliminating social programs. So why are a few Republican senators trying to make this a religious issue? Is it simply because conservative Christians are their constituency? What’s puzzling then is why, in the same week they’re about to use the nuclear option, they feel compelled to reach out to their churches to portray the filibuster as an illegitimate liberal power-grab? Why would Senators feel they must explain the issue in such a manner? Why sling make-believe mud on your constituents so they’ll get angry at Democrats? Instead, why not share the nominees’ records of rulings and decisions? If they are so deserving of confirmation that Republicans would resort to "M.A.D." politics, why then, do most Americans know nothing about the nominees? Why aren’t Republicans announcing to the world the great jurisprudence of the nominees and encouraging healthy debate on their degree of activism? Instead they’re crying foul at the minority who waves a simple banner, "don’t tread on me." I am a Christian and I am ashamed by the Republican party.

reform local news television

Letter to the LA Times

Dear Editor,
I must commend the Times and young Andrew Barr [Give them quality and they will watch, April 16] for pointing to real solutions for the dismal state of local television media. We the people desperately need quality media journalism in a medium that is easily absorbed and presents local in-depth coverage. Local television stations have powerful resources, which are too often squandered on sensational or emotive stories of little significance. Instead, television media should report stories related to local and regional economy, public health, and government. Please spend more time on these issues and even consider highlighting "municipality of the week." In choosing to cater to an information-seeking and community-conscious audience, local television can attract an untapped demographic which seeks to avoid sensational, sound-bite-ridden video news releases.

GOP's "mainstream"

Letter to the Washington Post,

Upon reading your article by Ronald Brownstein, [GOP Pounces on Byrd Link to Liberal Group, Wednesday, April 6] I remain only confused by Brian Nick’s portrayal of Byrd as "out of the mainstream," for taking campaign money through the "out of touch" progressive organization. I’m wondering what Nick’s "mainstream" actually means. What is the GOP definition of mainstream, and isn’t it different from the Democrat’s? Isn’t America divided politically? Furthermore, how does Nick know what characterizes those people who would be "in the mainstream," or as he labels MoveOn, "out of touch with West Virginia?" Your article does not mention if Brian Nick has ever been to West Virginia. This GOP "pounce" is more of a knee-jerk response, and seems a rather pathetic attempt to portray MoveOn members and beneficiaries as "out of touch" with reality. It’s incredible to see Tom DeLay’s Republicans complaining about campaign donations from legitimate organizations. I wonder who’s really out of the mainstream? Could Republicans simply be jealous they don’t have an efficient organization to reach the masses? As an ordinary citizen who believes in Senator Byrd for taking a stand and being a leader of conscience, I was one of the 3,500 first-time contributors through MoveOn. It was average Americans like myself contributing less than $100 who raised the money for Byrd. Frankly, I can’t afford the $500 a head, no-press-allowed, fundraising dinners the Republicans expect from the "mainstream."

FCC needs change

A letter to the Seattle Times

Thank you for your piece by Jonathan Lawson of March 1 explaining the better alternatives to FCC administration. With the potential for several FCC appointments, we should prepare our Senators to fight against Republican appointees who support the free-market interests of the telecom industry. Why not champion the chairman who will truly serve the public interest? We the people are saying we want more control over our own resources. The airwaves are becoming more and more vital as we progress into the information age. It is our right to be informed and have free access to information. To this end, we as communities should be afforded every opportunity to administer this right, this should include municipal wireless networks. With the FCC’s help, cities should be able to maintain and control their own airwaves, without interference by profit-driven corporations. The time has indeed come when the available technology will enable communities to maintain their own broadband communications infrastructure. Because the airwaves belong to the public, there is no reason to erect any legal barriers to hamper this effort. As Milton wrote, "to the public good, private respects must yield." The FCC should take this mantra to heart and begin treating communities like the entitled citizens they are. There is no line in our US Constitution that gives priority to free-market capitalism over the interest of the public. If states continue to usurp the right of the people by passing anti-municipal wireless bills, they should expect a far-reaching Constitutional challenge, which could undermine the telecom’s bottom line forever. It is clear the media industry and the FCC have enjoyed a comfortable relationship thus far. In adjusting the FCC’s mission to better serve the public in this brave new world, I would venture so far to say that the FCC should defer to local or regional communications commissions in granting licenses. With the power to regulate local airwaves, local authorities can tailor their services to their communities. Can you imagine our municipal or even congressional library services in the palm of your hand – with no monthly charge?
In Egypt long ago, our ancient fore-bearers built a great library of information. If only we could each access this information as our work and leisure permit us. While that great library was engulfed in flames, today we citizens have the Constitutional right, and with that comes the responsibility, to protect our airwaves from those barbarians who would pillage it from us.

Courts slam journalists

Letter to the LA Times

Dear Editor,
I am an avid supporter of free press and was appalled to read of Judge Quarles’ decision to uphold a ban on free press in Baltimore. Any government of the people should always be accountable to the press. I will hope to find the Quarles ruling unconstitutional. Despite this offense however, I cannot object to the DC Court of Appeals’ 3-0 ruling against Cooper and Miller. Your article of Feb. 16, 2005 by Savage and Rainey asserts that the right to refuse to testify is a First Amendment right. I would argue that freedom of the press does not include freedom from justice. In the case of the CIA leak, these reporters allegedly assisted in a felony act and are shielding those who should be prosecuted for it. Where journalistic confidentiality is concerned, there is a difference between protecting whistleblowers and obstructing justice. The judicial sanctions against reporters cited by your article are justified because the reporters themselves have overstepped the bounds of law and journalistic integrity. Bogus allegations of espionage against Wen Ho Lee should never have been reported and he is justified in seeking damages. We should be gravely concerned by reporters who aid in character assassinations before trial, especially when there is no criminal wrongdoing, except for the leak itself in which the reporter took part. While banning reporter access is wrong and should be overturned, we should thank the courts for enforcing some degree of ethics in the field of journalism because it’s increasingly apparent that news media is incapable of policing itself.

the Oregonian stoops low

letter to Oregonian

Dear Editor,
I was so disappointed to read Rich Lowry’s commentary of November 23 on your pages. Why would the Oregonian print such an unabashedly divisive and mean-spirited joke? For anyone to suggest that the media would collectively prefer one political outcome is a dismal and hurtful attempt at political humor. The grim fact remains that the media would never put themselves in a position where they could lose advertising dollars from either major, i.e. monied, political party. So why do you print a self-deprecating commentary which soils our nation’s leaders in the name of the media? Is it so the Oregonian can try to win back lost "moral" subscribers of the right-leaning politic?
What I found most disturbing was the attack on Colin Powell who has served this country so well. He is politely excusing himself from being in the morally-difficult position of having to advocate the self-serving Republican agenda over what’s best for international relations and the U.S. labor force. For Lowry to assert that Powell is self-serving is absurd. How are such demeaning remarks encouraged by the Oregonian? I challenge the Oregonian to find any scrap of evidence that would paint Secretary Powell in a self-serving light. If there is internal dissension in the White House could we not assume that maybe Bush and his cronies are wrong vis a vis the rest of the world? Lowry’s implicit attacks are simply immoral and plain wrong. And the Oregonian stoops down low to sling the mud. Why choose to alienate more readers at the expense of your own journalistic integrity? It just doesn’t make sense to print such baseless, antagonistic, hyperbole. As a forum for what should be intelligent thought and meaningful discussion, Rich Lowry has no place in the Oregonian.
